planting a fig tree in a pot

an image If you plant a fig tree in a pot you will be able to easily store the tree during winter. Also, you have to take into account that your tree will require a pot of a proper size. Ideally you can use any kind of container or garbage bin you find suitable. Having said that, there is a drawback in using a pot and this is related to the fact that pots will limit the growth of the roots and impact the growth of the tree. Therefore, it is recommended to prune the roots every three years on average. This will enable the tree to grow new roots and continue to expand. If root pruning is not performed the yields of figs will progressively diminish over the years. Also, using a pot can be a ideal solution for colder climates. This will be ideal since you will be able to easily store the tree in your garage or basement during the winter months.

planting a fig tree in the ground

Obviously, If you are living in the right climate and have available space ,this option is highly recommended. Nevertheless, If you reside in a colder climate such as eastern Canada this can still be done. However, you will need to properly protect the tree during winter. One option is to dig a trench and cut the roots of the tree on one side and the slowly bend the tree into the trench. Once this is done you can burry it and place a piece of board or insulation on top of it. The rule of thumb should be to have the tree buried bellow the frost line. Alternatively, you can wrap the tree with insulation. Most importantly, take into consideration your climate zone since this will determine the amount of insulation you will have to use.
