Where to buy a fig tree? (Canada & U.S.A.)
in montreal
There are a few places such as the Jean-Talon market during the summer or a few garden centres on the south shore. However, from my visits at the Jean-Talon market, the prices are simply outrageous, some of the sellers charge up to 200$ for a small tree. If you live in St-Leonard or N.D.G area of Montreal, you can try walking in the neighbourhood and find an Italian neighbour who would be happy to provide you a cutting from one of his fig trees.
There is also Craigslist and Kijiji where you can find advertisements for fig trees in the Montreal area. Most of the ads tend to be sporadic and the varieties are mostly unknown.
Another great source in Montreal which I can recommend is www.floraexotica.ca run by Perry Nguyen. His website is a bit old but he is a great source. In addition of being very reliable he organises sales in his backyard every weekend during the summer. His location is close to Du Collège Metro in the Saint-Laurent area of Montreal and he can be contacted at 514-747-7618.
Now you might be asking how about me? If you are in Montreal you can email me and I will try to arrange something for you. Otherwise, I highly suggest you have a look at my recommendations for alternative suppliers.

(Note: all fig trees are now sold-out for 2010)A new ''kid in the block'' Dany from brugmansia-quebec.com is selling all sorts of exotic plants. Most importantly, he is also selling
fig trees at very low prices. Currently, his list of varieties are Dorée, Jean-Talon, Black Mission, Green Ischia, Brunswick, Noire de Carombe, and Texas Everbearing. Besides
selling these varieties, Dany is in the process of propagating new varieties for the 2011 season. Having personally met Dany, I can highly recommend
him as a great source for fig trees and other exotic plants.

I have dealt with Grimo Nut Nursery in Niagara Ontario for other types of fruit trees and they have been very efficient
in responding and processing my orders. The prices are reasonable and the packaging for mail orders is impeccable.
Overall, I give them a 5 stars for customer service and getting me what I wanted. This is the place to start if you want
your first fig tree.

As mentioned earlier, floraexotica.ca is run by Perry Nguyen from Montreal. Most of his customers are from outside of
Montreal and I have not purchased any fig trees from him. However, from my visits of his backyard I can guarantee that
he is also selling fig trees. He specialises in exotic plants and is very knowledgeable about what he sells. As stated,
he is reliable and is there to help you!

Many people in the fig community speak of the ''legendary'' Adriano Ferrera located in Oakville Ontario. He definitively
has quite an extensive collection of fig trees and has all these trees cramped in his back yard. Most importantly, he is
very knowledgeable and kind.
However, there is a downside to dealing with Adriano. From my experience it is very hard to get a response from him and I had to be very patient since sometimes it took me over 2 to 3 months of repetetive emails to get a response. To this, other people who have dealt with Adriano told me of similar stories. From my last news he was charging 6$ per cutting and 11$ for shipping.
in the U.S.A.
This part is for people living in the U.S. and it lists suppliers who only ship within the U.S.A. To this, there are several sources in the U.S.A. and it is beyond my ability to list or verify the reliability of all of them. Therefore, feel free to look at other alternatives that are not listed here. However, I will state that you should never buy from TyTy Nursery as they have been known for cheating customers in the U.S. See this link for the whole story on TyTy Nursery.

eBay.com is a great place to find fig cuttings in the U.S.A. all year round. Though, during the period of spring and fall you will be able to find several more offers of rooted fig plants and cuttings. Having said that, you should exercise caution from which seller you buy your fig trees. The reason is, some unscrupulous sellers are selling falsely labelled fig trees and cuttings (One example is Mifig4fun).
The following sellers can considered as reliable : ep johnsvmf, figsnstuff, treesofjoy, ItalyItaly, hermansur and arigato.

Eastcoastfigs.com is a personal web page run by Gene who is a very knowledgeable fig collector. Gene is not officially a seller but if you contact him he is sometimes able to sell some cuttings or fig trees from his impressive collection. He has an extensive knowledge on the cultivation of figs in the Mid-Atlantic region and is the right person to contact for advice. I had the chance to exchange a few emails with him and I can highly recommend Gene as a trustable person.

Treesofjoy.com is another great place to find rare specimens of fig trees and other interesting fruit trees from the Middle East and Europe. Most of the business is done online, but if you happen to be in the area of Bethlehem in Pennsylvania a visit is highly recommended. Additionally, Bassem Samaan is the owner and you can expect from him the highest level of professionalism. If there was to be a slogan for treesofjoy.com it would probably be ‘we have the unique varieties that you will never find elsewhere’.

With one of the largest collection of fig cultivars in North America Jon Verdick’s encantofarms.com nursery (A.K.A. figs4fun.com) is a must stop for all fig enthusiasts! If you happen to be in the San Diego area a visit is highly recommended. Jon Verdick has been in the business since his childhood and is a ‘walking encyclopaedia’ on anything related to figs and bananas.
